Music Theory
		To understand the theory of music gives students greater depth and insight when learning to play an instrument. To be able to take instrument Grades 6 exam or above with the 'Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music’ students must have achieved a pass at Grade 5 level theory. We therefore generally include theory into each practical lesson as part of the ongoing instrumental tuition. Students are provided with regular homework and encouraged to study at home. Musical theory can also be studied as a subject in its own right, lessons can be given on a one-to-one basis or in small groups for a minimum of half an hour a week. Students can progress at their own speed and may take as many or as few exams as they wish. Past papers are used and marked prior to taking examinations to familiarise students with the required standard. Aural and Sight-reading For students who have forthcoming examinations and feel unsure about the aural and sight-reading tests, particularly on the higher grades where the extra few marks can make all the difference, we can offer you extra tuition. These would be in addition to your own regular lessons with your own teacher and they carry no obligation to continue once your examination has been passed. We can offer you as many or few  private lessons as required in these areas. Examinations Music examinations are voluntary but they are a useful means to measure progress. We use ‘The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music’ (ABRSM),‘The London College of Music’ (LCM) and ‘Rockschool’ boards. These boards are all recognised by the QCA, the main governing body for all exams including GCSE’s and A Levels. A pass on a musical instrument at Grades 6, 7 or 8 will be awarded UCAS points, which may help with entry to university.  The number of points the candidate will receive is based on their Grade and mark.
