Music Theory Without doubt, this is probably one of the most important areas of study, to be able to understand the theory of music gives the student a greater depth and insight when learning to play an instrument. As a subject in its own right, lessons are given on a one-to-one basis or in small groups for a minimum of half an hour a week. The standard taught is from elementary i.e no previous musical knowledge, upwards, and as part of the ongoing tuition students are provided with regular homework and encouraged to study at home. For those wishing to gain recognised qualifications or to progress further on their own instrument (grade 5 theory is required to be able to take instrumental grades 6 and above), students will be entered for examinations through the 'Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music'. Past papers are used and marked prior to taking examinations to familiarise students with the required standard. Aural and Sight-reading For students who have forthcoming examinations coming up and feel unsure about the aural and sight-reading tests, particularly on the higher grades where the extra few marks can make all the difference, why not consider extra tuition? We can offer you as many or few private lessons as required in these areas. This would be in addition to your own regular lessons with your own teacher and carries no obligation to continue once your examinations has been passed.
